This was one of the earlier safe-sex ads that was sent in by Bob. He didn't say where he was from but he mentioned that this was actually a common sight in the major cities in Africa during the late 1980s, not long after the global awareness campaigns started.
In my case, the sex education I received from my mother was hardly an education at all. It was more like a warning and there was no mention of AIDS. My mum, a single mum, was a woman of a few words - 'I'll beat you if you get pregnant!' or something along those lines and that was it!
Early days, those words would reverberate in my head. But as I grew older, foolishly thinking myself wiser, the draw of sex was overwhelming. I was in a way obsessed with it. Well, look how I turned out?
Anyway, I am determined not to do the same with my daughter and constantly remind her about safe-sex. With the generation today, it's really asking for trouble when you set rules and regulations or say 'Don't do this' or 'Don't do that!' Chances are, once you turn your back, they are on their backs! So I subscribe to safety first and subtly ingrain in them the value building a relationship outside of sex.
Missus Singapore out!
