SAD SANDY

Sandy is an administrative executive in a legal firm here and is divorced. Not surprisingly, Christmas is one of the most wretched times of the year for her.

She had been married for 12 years before she and her husband got a divorce in August this year. There was a lot of anger and frustration but she eventually pulled herself out of that only to be hit by the seasonal reflections that all of us experience.

She cited irreconcilable differences as the reason behind their failed marriage but in truth, the breakdown had to do a lot with their failure to focus on their relationship. They had both been doing well in their respective careers and had two wonderful children, 4 and 7 years of age. She also enjoyed a close relationship with her husband's family.

When she announced to her girlfriends about the split, we were shocked. Not much shocks me honestly but this did to some extend. I knew both of them well and had the impression that they somehow figured things out. I was wrong, and so was she.

She mentioned sometime back that their sex life was bad. (I actually posted a blog about it last year.) I knew the importance of sex in a marriage although I also accept that it is not the only critical factor but nonetheless, for them, it was at the very core of their break-up.

They never argued about finances, or bringing up the kids and stuff. However, they never argued about sex too because neither was making time for it too. Inevitably, the intimacy or lack of it, dug a chasm in the background that both of them were oblivious to.

I remember asking her why they weren't getting it on more and her reply was that there will be time enough to do so once things get settled. That was in 2006. Look what has happened in 2010.

It was no fun spending time during Christmas with a friend crying on your shoulder and I hope she manages to sort things out soon. But with divorce cases on the rise here (and around the world), we really should start thinking more about putting in more into a marital relationship. It is not just for the two people involved but when you have a family, the children are the most important.

I'm not saying that having more sex and intimacy in a marriage is a fool-proof way to avoid a divorce but with so many factors pulling a couple towards it, it will help if there is one less area to worry about.

Happy Boxing Day Folks. I had a hilarious email from a reader in the UK. She is in University there and says that she and her university mates have started a tradition since last year when they boobed people during Boxing Day. In fact they call it Boobing Day!

T'WAS THE DAY BEFORE X'MAS

If you haven't done your Christmas shopping yet, too bad. I've done mine and completed it only yesterday. It was easier shopping for my girlfriends than boyfriends, for the simple reason that they never reveal too much about what they like.

It does put me in a better position financially, but I found myself struggling to balance my time between work, family and friends. I suppose my resolution next year has to focus on getting the mix just right.

TOY FOR XXX'MAS

LIGHT IT UP

I've always held the position that women need to accentuate their best physical attributes. I'm not suggesting they show pop out their boobs or have their butt show up.

I'm talking about choosing the right type of clothes for your body type. It doesn't matter if you are on the chubby side or thin side, there are always possibilities. Judging by how many Singaporean women choose their attire, I really think they should introduce dress-up instruction in school.

My suggestion, and I've done this many times in the past, is to walk into a boutique run by the designers themselves. Chances are, they will be present and I find them most willing to share what colours and clothes would look good ona customer. You need not have to purchase anything (although I often do), but you walk away with some useful information.

I don't necessarily agree with what many designers seem to say - if you got boobs show them off - but they do offer good suggestions. For instance, ask them what kind of colours suit you, the shoes, belt or other accessories and chances are they will tell you.

If all else fails, there is always a fail-proof way, string some lights over the parts of your body you want people to be drawn to.

So at the cab stand, I observed a local Chinese girl in her mid-20s walked out of the store to join the cue. I just could not get my eyes away from her because although she had a stunning body, she resembled a ghost from a cheap Japanese horror flick.

She had on just about the right amount of make-up but she was pale. To accentuate her paleness, she wore a white long-sleeved shirt which was all wrong. It was reflecting light onto her already pale face which made her look, well, like a ghost, for a lack of a better word.

One thing I noticed about many young women in Singapore is that while they may have the spending power to don the best threads, they really fall short when it comes to understanding what works best for them - the fashion sense so to speak.

Skin tone is everything when it comes to wearing the right hues. Day and night-time wear can make a difference. So unless you have a tanned complexion, stay away from whites during the day, period, or until you get a proper tan.

For the darker complexion ones, the white actually lightens up your face giving you the perfect glow. For the fair and pale ones, it just doesn't work.
