WHAT DOC ORDERED

Annie works in the corporate communications department of a healthcare provider here in Singapore. I've known her for almost ten years and we met because she was coordinating interviews that I had to do with doctors. I was writing a lot about woman's health issues back then. To come to think of it, hell, I'm still writing an awful lot about it, although thankfully, it has moved somewhat into sexual health.

So anyway, out of the blue, she calls me and tells me she is now married and has a two year old girl. So we started chatting and I asked how is the marital flame burning for her. Her momentary silence told me a lot. But then she replied saying that the marriage was okay but the sex was far from it.

I pried and found out that they were having sex like twice a week. Duh?

By comparison, I insist of a higher frequency but judging from the bigger scheme of things, she was doing pretty good. In fact, I told her that many women I know would certainly envy her!

Right now I can think of five of my girlfriends who wished they had sex once a week at least! And I was only thinking of five girlfriends. The problem here is prioritising. Annie and her husband both work full office hours so the fact that they make time for each other tells that sex is pretty high up their list.

I hear all sorts of excuses but if couples take the time to prioritise and perhaps even lend a hand every now and then, sex is not an impossibility. Sadly, making money is top on the list. Many say family but if you truly treasure your family, that means ensuring that your marital relationship is on a good standing.

Sex is definitely not the only answer for it but it goes a long way in establishing and strengthening intimacy. Think about it, kids growing up with loving parents stand a better chance spring-boarding off from a stable family unit to face the world riddled with uncertainty.

In any case, a new research showed that people, especially men, who have sex at least twice a week stand a better chance of reducing a risk of heart-attacks by up to 50%. The promotional poster read "F%@K FOR YOUR HEART"
