GIRL GONE POLITICAL

As i posted a few days ago, the General Elections in Singapore are around the corner. Interestingly, there is a new candidate that the ruling party is fielding. Initially, I was proud that another woman has finally entered politics.

I was thinking how she could possibly add more weight to the importance of women in society. Moreover, being only 27 years young, I was also thinking she would be a good voice for the youth. But then I heard her speak and my enthusiasm went crashing to the ground.

I am not going into political issues but let's just say if all women speak or carry themselves like her, there is every reason to feel that men would just be better left to run our affairs. Not only is she turning out to be a pompous giddy-headed girl but one who has certainly no idea what frequency women or youth for that matter are on these days.

My point is, sometimes, when your talents are not in public speaking or spontaneous Q&A, just keep a low profile and stay out of the limelight. Oh and one male reader wrote in to say why, 'with so many attractive and intelligent women out there, has the ruling party have to get a pig-headed woman with nothing to look at'.

Well, unfortunately, I have to jump in her defence to state that not all beautiful and intelligent women are willing to jump on the political bandwagon. Most are in fact smarter than that. For me at least, it is not all about looks. It's more about charisma and how you carry yourself but unfortunately, that is where she fails short.

THE SEX GLOW

It's really beautifying really. I find it the best way to not only start my day but to get an all-over glow.

I know for a fact that by having regular sex, your blood circulation is enhanced. What I only just discovered is how regular sex can add shine to the hair and smoothness to the skin. This apparently, is due to the spike in production of oestrogen, a female sex hormone. (No more wrinkle cream needed.)

I'm also told that when lovemaking is pleasurable, it can also decrease the possibility of suffering from dermatitis, rashes and blemishes. The skin is also given a cleaning when sweating during sex. Of course you can also take a run and harness the same benefits here.

What I like most and scientists have since proven, is that sex can increase the lymph flow throughout the body. This helps to remove bacteria, toxins and other waste products that accumulate in the thighs and upper arms. So if you have problems fighting cellulite, sex is yet another way to overcome them.

More reasons to hit the sack, don't you agree?

WEAPON OF MASS DISTRACTION

Many women spend a lot of their lives doing things (READ: Spending money on beauty and fashion) trying to be or look like somebody they are not or who they can never be. When they are young, it's looking up to older 'role models' and when they get older, it becomes a perpetual battle trying to look like somebody younger.

I think that this quest to look like someone else is just robbing them of the best years of their lives. They could be doing a lot more to promote their own inner characteristics and outer charms. I have to admit that when I was younger, I did for a while try to emulate some women.

Don't laugh but I had to save my allowance for a whole school term just so that I could have a Farrah Fawcett hairstyle. Invariably, there was also the make-up that was a must wear during parties at the time - Mary Quant. We were awe struck by Jean Shrimpton, the world's first real supermodel from London who helped proliferate the Mod and Swinging London looks of the 60s and 70s.

I'm not proposing we stop this idol-worshiping (not that we can) because all women or girls go through this stage. The thing is, I'd figure that once they grow up and mature and become supposedly wiser, that they would grow out of this phase. Instead it gets worse for many of them.

I have some friends in their forties who are still going for hairstyles that stars have even though it does not necessarily suit them of bring out their best attributes.

As you get older, it's better paying attention to what works for you, what you feel comfortable with and not what magazine models or celebrities showcase. Unless you have personal trainers, fashion advisors (and designers), $1,000-an-hour hairdressers or touch-up artists shadowing you all the while, it ain't gonna work for you.

There are literally millions of looks and as many styles as there are people out there so find one that is you. Confidence will follow once you get the look that suits you.  If you watch a fashion show, you can tell. Just look at the models and you will have some idea who likes what they are wearing and who doesn't. It's not in their smile (because they hardly ever do) but in their body language.

One of the most powerful weapons of mass distraction (WMD) is a woman's confidence. She may not be the most attractive in the room but if she is confident, she will be noticed for sure. Now isn't that what we all spend indecent amounts of money to achieve?

FOCUS ON BASICS

An ex-colleague I met recently just went for a nose job and honestly, I never noticed it at all. It wasn't that she had a big honker or anything like that. I recall though that she always had the perception that it was not symmetrical.

It was a pity because I always thought that she looked fine - a few years younger than me but still she could definitely turn heads. This really is a good example of what false self-perceptions can lead to.

The funny thing is that she still had her messy hair. She could have spent a fraction of the cost of her nose job on straightening her hair instead. It was just naturally wiry and messy and it was obvious that she never took pains to look after it. She also had thick eyebrows that made her look scary at times but nothing a little grooming wouldn't change.

I think many women look for a change in the way they look as they age. I'm no different but I feel that the problem is that they sidestep the basics and believe that change equates to going under the knife. Sometimes, all it takes is a little more time on the basics and you can achieve wonders.

Better quality make-up, a good hairstylist, facial grooming, eating healthy and exercising can achieve wonders. How much will that cost? I gather much less than a nose job. It is an era of quick-fix - everyone wants it like yesterday.

Let's take a step back ladies and focus on the basics - the natural weapons that can be lethal if we paid more personal attention to them.

A SLICE OF BEAUTY

Many subscribe to the philosophy of ‘taking one day at a time’ while others insist on ‘planning for the future’. For many women, mothers mostly, there are other strategies on their list – ‘live life with no cellulite and stretch marks’ and ‘stay in shape’, among others.

It’s always sounds nice – letting one’s inner beauty ooze out for all to see. But the reality of it, in my opinion, is that it works quite the opposite. Get the looks and shape you like and you invariably start to feel better about yourself.

For me keeping in a healthy weight range has never been a problem. Exercise is my drug these days. My frustration has to do with the carving and chiseling the arms, tummy, thighs, breasts and butt. I’ll get the contours one day (I hope) and persistence and patience are certainly worth virtues to possess.

If you’re in a hurry though, and have some spare cash earning little to no interest in the bank, then there are always ways to attain that sought-after body. Indeed there are ample centers these days, where one can get any sort of body contouring procedure done. However, what prompts many to eventually give it a pass has to do with doubts about expertise behind the treatment.

So in order to quell your fears, look for a center that comes with some form of accreditation by a relevant body. An organization like Sono Bello for instance has the experience, expertise and medical know-how required to deliver such treatments safely. It boasts highly trained staff and state-of-the-art equipment to offer safe and seamless treatments for a variety of problem areas. And to top things off, their physicians are all board certified.

It’s also important to know what you want before hand and stick to it. If something else is proposed in addition to what you want, don’t decide then and there. Get as much information as you can (i.e. literature, full cost plus hidden costs) and go home to do your own research. Think carefully about it and try to seek the opinion of others - better if they are in or know the industry.

Always make sure you know the procedure you are aiming for and its purpose. Sono Bello’s Micro Laser Liposuction and Body Sculpting technology for instance, permanently removes fat cells to enhance and shape almost any area of your body. They also have other procedures to tighten loose skin, reduce cellulite and diminish stretch marks. The choices are many.

At the end of the day, the decisions you make will affect you and you only. So it makes good sense to find out as much as you can before you claim your slice of beauty. Exercise or otherwise, when it comes to beauty, doing nothing is the worst thing you can do.
